THE SITUATION IN CHILE AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE PDF Print E-mail

The President General, José Ramón Díaz-Torremocha, deeply moved by the tragedy that occurred last Saturday 27 February 2010, sent a message of solidarity in the name of the Council General to the Vincentians of Chile, and promised prayers for all those affected.

The members of the Council General will be ready to provide the Superior Council of Chile with help in any way they can.

We have received the following news from our Territorial Vice President, Renato de Lima, on the situation in Chile.

The National President of SSVP Chile, Francisco Velasco, has had no reports of any injuries or deaths among Vincentians. Nor are there any reported deaths or injuries among those helped by Vincentian Conferences (families, or old people) so far. The Superior Council will produce a register showing the situation of our families, in order to see what happens. An old people’s home in the town of TALCA was damaged or partly destroyed, but none of the old people was injured, as they were all evacuated beforehand.

The Zone Coordinator, Régulo Valenzuela Matte, is well, as are Francisco Velasco and the other officers of the Chilean SSVP Superior Council.

Régulo Valenzuela Matte sent us this: "Dear Brother José Ramón: Many thanks for your concern at these difficult times. We are trying to assemble a report on the position of those helped by the Society, very difficult because of problems with communications. Thank you so much for your prayers, they give us strength and consolation. Once more, our thanks”.

Council General has opened an account for contributions for Chile. Members around the world can make donations to help our brothers and sisters in Chile.

You can also send your donations by cheque to

EUROPEAN UNION FUNDING FOR A PROJECT IN THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 11 March 2010 10:05

The EU has granted funding to the SSVP in the Central African Republic for a basic formation project. Over the next 48 months, this project will strengthen the capacity of the work of the SSVP, enabling it to provide better support for socially marginalised people in the RCA.

The aims of this project are:

  • To increase Conference participation in a variety of projects by better mobilisation of their own resources, giving sustainable support to the most deprived people.
  • To improve the capabilities and technical skills of the staff at the various levels of the SSVP’s organisation, to formulate consistent projects that can help to increase the access of external resources, plan the work better and manage resources more effectively.
This is the first time we have succeeded in winning funding from the European Union in this way for an African country. The International Council has agreed to provide the 10% co-funding requested by the EU, and will continue to help the RCA during the course of the project.

The General Council is absolutely scared by the tragedy that has hit Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, where as you surely know, we are starting a big project in collaboration with the Vincentian Family. Right now, the General Council is calling for a subscription from all Conferences throughout the world, to raise the necessary financial means to reconstruct buildings and to alleviate the best we can, most of the suffering of people.

Note from the Vincentian Family: Lenten Letter of Father General of the Congregation of the Mission PDF Print E-mail

Among the different creative ways of resisting violence in our world today, the author puts forth fragility as an essential. At the same time he proposes the strength of horizontal dimensions in the organization of society as a solution, rather than hierarchical structures. In other words, the basis of solutions is achieved in a circular fashion, a sort of ‘around the table’ type of discussion where all those who are at the table, including the poor and the marginalized, are given the opportunity to express themselves as equals in the discussions.
